Running an Energy4me Program
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) encourages its members to educate the public about energy and put a face on the industry. Energy is a critical issue worldwide, and SPE believes face-to-face contact is the ideal way to spread the word about energy conservation, the future of the oil and gas industry and its impact on the planet. SPE’s Energy4me program is designed to make an impact with website resources, teacher development and speaker programs.
Together, we can make a difference by sharing the facts about energy with the public and putting a face on the industry.
Each section approaches energy education differently depending on the section size and activity level. The most successful education programs generally have a committee to oversee energy education activities with a chairperson who serves more than one year and three to five members who also serve more than one year with staggered terms. Another option is to assign committee members to specific events for which they would be responsible for all the event activities.
Individual SPE members can volunteer by using the Online Application.
What Are Your Section’s Interests?
There are many simple and effective ways to assess the section’s energy education interests. Start with your section subcommittees, which may be able to help select appropriate energy education initiatives. Member interest surveys can also be conducted through your section newsletter.
Donate Energy4me Materials to Schools
Reach thousands of students in your community by donating Energy4me materials to local teachers and students. We rely on the generous support of SPE sections, corporations and other organizations to reach teachers in their own communities. Materials can be donated at Energy4me teacher workshops, special events such as Engineers Week, science fairs, or directly to a school’s science department.
Items Available for Donation:
- “Oil and Natural Gas” books ($10 USD each) – for teacher or student events
- “Energy4me Kits” ($30 USD each) – for elementary, intermediate and secondary teachers
- “Petroleum Engineer” career brochures (free in quantities up to 100)
- “Smart Energy Choices” bookmarks (free in quantities up to 100)
Support Teacher and Student Educational Workshops
Energy4me holds free one-day teacher professional development workshops and student education events at select SPE conferences. Each event covers grade-specific, hands-on energy lessons and activities, offers keynote speakers from the industry, and includes a technology tour (if available).
We seek volunteers to support these events through facilitating registration, leading exhibition tours, material translation, event coordination, and corporate sponsorship.
Many SPE sections offer scholarships and grants as a method of educational outreach. In addition to scholarships, many sections offer funding for university student travel and purchasing of books and computer software, as well as other forms of educational outreach such as supporting teacher education, science fair sponsorships and Engineers Week events. Grant programs are a great way to enrich education in your community. Team with corporations (if needed) to award classrooms funding for science lab equipment, computers, field trips or other educational materials.
Classroom presentations to pre-university students are a great way to provide facts about energy and inspire students toward careers in the energy sector. Energy4me makes presentation preparation quick and easy.
We offer ready-to-go PowerPoint presentations and fun activities that can be customized by individual presenters to give a local and personal perspective. Plus, Energy4me donates an Oil and Natural Gasbook for you to give to the teacher at the presentation.

Young Professionals and University Student Volunteering
Young professionals and university students in the oil and gas industry can have a huge impact on younger students, sharing educational and career possibilities that many may have never considered. Children relate to professionals who are close to their own age, which puts these volunteers in high demand. Engineers who are just starting their careers and university students can provide insight into what academic subjects to pursue throughout high school and college, the field’s vast technological opportunities and the many rewards of a career in energy. Presentations also give them the opportunity to polish leadership and public speaking skills to benefit their own careers.
Get your section’s young professionals or student chapters involved by encouraging them to give classroom presentations. SPE’s Energy4me program gives them everything they need to energize students. Your section’s education committee might also consider pairing young professionals or university students with more senior members for collaborative presentations.
Publicize Your Event
Showcase the contribution your members are already making and bring greater recognition to members who have been contributing their time and talent through your section newsletter, website, at meetings, and by letting Energy4me know about your outreach efforts. Features may appear on the website and social media to recognize your efforts and inspire others to join in on the fun!
If you plan to take photos of your student event that may be published, please use a Minor Photo Release form to obtain permission.
